WHY SCHOOL? (2)

Image
Schooling for many people is to prepare them for a solid, safe financial future and this is where many get it wrong. While securing a future is a good thing, schooling is designed for a more holistic purpose. Has I had said in my previous post, wrong department or not, schooling helps build a total man (or woman). At best what your departmental choice will do for you is to bring you basic concepts and terminologies that will make training easier. So why school? EDUCATION FOR A FUTURE CAREER While the general concept of schooling, particularly tertiary education is to upgrade the level of thought and ability to reason, schooling, in particular, tailors your suitability for specific career choices. While you ultimately decide what you want to do with your life, the kind of education you get particularly based on your course options will prepare you for a future career in that area. I have emphasized before that while the techniques and methods for achieving results ...

WHY YOU SHOULD REGISTER THAT BUSINESS (IDEA)

Image
Business is starting up, doing well and you are making strides, meeting your targets. The thoughts of registering your business come to mind or you have heard people talking about it. You are interested, but really do not see the need. Why spend your hard earned profit giving the government when you can continue your local business without any hindrance? Here are some reasons and benefits I know from registering your business. 1. Validation You cannot beat the sense of validation that registering your business brings. I remember when the silver grey and green CAC sheet got to me. It was a feeling of accomplishment. My dream was not fully achieved, but I had gotten it off from being just a thought to something concrete. I was not just another startup idea to be added to the countless others in dreamland, it was real and the energy it gave me to forge ahead huge.   As an entrepreneur, you want to break down your dream into smaller achievable tasks and registering is a ...

DON'T DO A MASTERS...YET!

Image
If you have attended any of my classes particularly for final and penultimate year students, you would have heard me at one time or the other make this statement, even with mild threats (of course with clear explanations. The phrase is just for catch power!). While I did a master's degree (and will conclude my PhD soon), I have advised a lot of students not to take that route. It might look hypocritical, but I will explain it to you. The problem largely stems from a lot of students not being able to decide on time what they want to do with their lives. Like I usually say, schooling is meant to mature you, and sadly, a lot of students spend 4/5 years in school without determining or charting a course for their lives or careers (I recently had to reprimand a small group who were more interested in bragging about the number of female genitalia they have mutilated with theirs, instead of focusing on their upcoming exams). Fortunately, the government gives everyone a one y...

BUSINESS IS ALL ABOUT TRADE - TRADE YOUR TALENTS

Image
Skills and Talents are a valuable resource one can possess in the market place of life. In fact, putting talent and time to use, one can get as much money as your heart can desire. I once knew a young man who travelled abroad with almost nothing save a backpack and his dreams. He was skilled and well vast in the creative space particularly media. Although it took him time to acquire a work permit and to get a good employ to work his skills at, he already got going from day one by selling his skills in exchange for the needed stability he required to settle down. He got talking to the employment agency staff and told them about his ability to design graphic elements, posters and the like and did a few for the office there. Immediately, the lady took up his case file, giving him tips and helping him secure the best job offers. She also linked him with small businesses requiring design services, gave him hints as to what to expect and how to negotiate a good salary at the int...

At best what your departmental choice will do for you is to bring you basic concepts and terminologies that will make training easier. So why school? TO SHOW YOU ARE ABLE TO HANDLE YOUR LIFE (MATURE) A number of us got into school early. For someone who finished schooling at 21, I was still not the youngest in my class!   We had guys who could not handle their finances and kept on calling home for reinforcement. One guy lost all his property during the first week. It was like boarding school all over again. Most had issues with academics, no longer being in a regimented environment, they experienced liberty (sweet liberty) for the first time and instead of a...

BUSINESS IS ALL ABOUT TRADE - TRADE YOUR TIME

Image
Your time is a valuable resource! Time is a valuable resource, and as my mentor once said, "time is more valuable than money because time is life". There is nothing that a man can exchange for life. Majority of people are employed to do tasks that their employers are not necessarily unable to do, but really do not have the time to do. Let's take for instance a small supply business. If Mr X owns a supply business and starting out he handled all aspects of the business, with new growth he is very likely to hire Miss Y to keep the books and take stock of the shipments. This is not because he doesn't have the competency, but with expansion, he does not have all the time to handle that task. Miss Y may be competent at it, which will focus on her abilities or talent, but his first reason is to free up some of his time to do the other things he deems as important. The salary he pays to Miss Y is first for her time and for her competency. Several people do n...

HELP! I AM IN THE WRONG DEPARTMENT!!

Image
Help! I am in the wrong department!! One major excuse I have heard repeatedly given for failure in academics is the choice of a wrong course. It is a major factor contributing to the loss of interest and ultimate dissolution of grit, passion and determination to succeed. Many people start off well and give up once the going gets tough simply because they believe "they are not wired" for the rigours. While it is true that interest and ability determines a lot with regards with output and performance, it doesn’t outrightly mean you have to be a failure. I love talking about my entry into school and how I matured into what I do today. The saying goes that "when the desirable is not available, the available should become desirable". We live in an environment where to a large extent the choice of the course to study is determined by parents, guardians or sponsors. They ultimately have a say (a beggar has no choice), and are also expected to do some little ...
