WHY SCHOOL? (1)

Image
Schooling for many people is to prepare them for a solid, safe financial future and this is where many get it wrong. While securing a future is a good thing, schooling is designed for a more holistic purpose. As I have said in my previous post , wrong department or not, school builds a total man (or woman). At best what your departmental choice will do for you is to bring you basic concepts and terminologies that will make training easier. So why school? TO SHOW YOU ARE ABLE TO HANDLE YOUR LIFE (MATURE) A number of us got into school early. For someone who finished schooling at 21, I was still not the youngest in my class!   We had guys who could not handle their finances and kept on calling home for reinforcement. One guy lost all his property during the first week. It was like boarding school all over again. Most had issues with academics, no longer being in a regimented environment, they experienced liberty (sweet liberty) for the first time and instead of a...

BUSINESS IS ALL ABOUT TRADE - TRADE YOUR TIME

Image
Your time is a valuable resource! Time is a valuable resource, and as my mentor once said, "time is more valuable than money because time is life". There is nothing that a man can exchange for life. Majority of people are employed to do tasks that their employers are not necessarily unable to do, but really do not have the time to do. Let's take for instance a small supply business. If Mr X owns a supply business and starting out he handled all aspects of the business, with new growth he is very likely to hire Miss Y to keep the books and take stock of the shipments. This is not because he doesn't have the competency, but with expansion, he does not have all the time to handle that task. Miss Y may be competent at it, which will focus on her abilities or talent, but his first reason is to free up some of his time to do the other things he deems as important. The salary he pays to Miss Y is first for her time and for her competency. Several people do n...

MY MESSAGE TO BAD BOYS

Image
Are you a bad boy? Do you love sitting at the back of the class? Chatting away, distracted and really not interested in the class at hand? Do you find yourself always at the other end of the wrath of lecturers, with endless complaints about you being a bad boy? Do you have a below average academic performance or Grade point Average (GPA). This message is for you! Throughout my schooling days, I knew better than sit at the back, because that is where the bad boys sat. Even if you were not a bad boy, you stood the risk of being caught alongside them in their antics and probably ended up as the scapegoat because you were not vast at evading punishment like they were. My mother always advised to seat in front and that is just what I did! Now a lecturer, I have the opportunity to interact will all sections of the class. While so many of the facts that went along that advice are truisms, one thing I have realised is that the "bad boys" have a pretty much clearer outlook ...

HELP! I AM IN THE WRONG DEPARTMENT!!

Image
Help! I am in the wrong department!! One major excuse I have heard repeatedly given for failure in academics is the choice of a wrong course. It is a major factor contributing to the loss of interest and ultimate dissolution of grit, passion and determination to succeed. Many people start off well and give up once the going gets tough simply because they believe "they are not wired" for the rigours. While it is true that interest and ability determines a lot with regards with output and performance, it doesn’t outrightly mean you have to be a failure. I love talking about my entry into school and how I matured into what I do today. The saying goes that "when the desirable is not available, the available should become desirable". We live in an environment where to a large extent the choice of the course to study is determined by parents, guardians or sponsors. They ultimately have a say (a beggar has no choice), and are also expected to do some little ...

BUSINESS IS ALL ABOUT TRADE - WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO OFFER?

Image
What do you have to offer? Every man has something to offer. I once learnt from a random video I saw online. It was a bit transient, but the thought never left me. We all have something to offer and a thorough understanding of this will help us put things in the correct perspective. My understanding of this helped me greatly in negotiating even when it seemed I was at a disadvantage. It made me more confident in the face of undesirable odds, because I know I always had something to offer. You have something to offer and the earlier you realise it, the better for you. You may ask, what are those things that I have to offer…. A man has at least one of the following; Time Money Talent I call them TMT after my favourite cartoon heroes, Turtle Ninjas. Now that I am grown, I've gotten new inspiration from Floyd Mayweather and retagged them "The Money Team". Ultimately, everyone has been given at least one of those. It is impossible to see a man without...
